Shifting seasons are upon us, and while your mind may be filled with tasty visions of pumpkin spice lattes and candy corn, don’t forget to complete those not-so-sweet tasks that will keep your home safe from the harsh temperatures on the way. Make sure these fall maintenance tips are on your to-do list this season.
Clear Your Gutters
It’s a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. A clogged gutter will only leave you with a bigger mess later on that you do not want. Give them a little love now so they love you back all season long. If you’ve been neglecting them for a while, now may be the time to consider replacing them.
Clean Your Lawn and Garden Tools
Now is the time to prep your mower and any garden tools for hibernation. If you’re not skilled in tuning up your own mower, take it into a shop now for maintenance and repairs to beat the rush in the spring. Make sure your garden tools are cleaned and stored away for easy access when warmer weather returns.
Winterize Your Lawn
If you want a great lawn in the spring, the work starts now in the fall. Depending on your type of grass, consider aerating your lawn to disrupt compaction and allow air and moisture to get into the ground. Fertilize your lawn and give those roots some nourishment so it can look its best when new blades start to sprout.
Perform a Safety Check
Go through your home and check any smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. They may need a battery refresh or you may consider purchasing new ones. This is also a great time to check any fire extinguishers. Ensuring it’s not clogged and pins are properly in place is crucial, especially if you find yourself needing it in an emergency. If you’ve had the fire extinguisher for some years, check for an expiration date. It may be past its prime causing it to be ineffective.
Inspect for Air Leaks
Inspect your doors and windows for any air leaks. Heat loss is an expensive problem to have. Caulk and apply weatherstripping where necessary.
Clean Your Fireplace
As cool weather returns, you may be jumping at the chance to start up the fireplace. Before you do, take a look inside. Is it clear of all debris? Call a professional to inspect and clean every inch just to be sure your fireplace is in tip-top shape.
Venture into Your Attic
When’s the last time you’ve taken a trip up to your attic? Attics can be nice, warm hiding spots for pests. Check for any entryways and close them off before the cold weather forces unwanted critters to find shelter in your home.
